The City filed its objections to the Judge's Tentative Decision in the City's Right to Take trial for the Claremont Water System on November 23, 2016. The City expects the judge to review the objections and issue a final decision at the end of December.

Over the weekend, several mosques in the Los Angeles were sent hateful letters. The Islamic Center of Claremont, located on Garey Avenue in Pomona, received one of the letters. The Mayor sent a letter of support to the Islamic Center on November 29, 2016. The City of Claremont and Claremont Police Department want to express our support for our Muslim community and reassure our residents that hate and racism will not be tolerated in Claremont. Claremont remains a safe and inclusive community that embraces diversity and respect for all people.

On November 16, 2016, the City Council held a special City Council meeting to discuss the litigation in closed session. During the closed session, the Council conferred with the legal team on the City’s response to the Statement of Tentative Decision. The City Council directed legal counsel to prepare a response to the Tentative Decision identifying any inaccuracies, omissions, and errors of law. The City’s response will cite evidence and testimony presented during the trial supporting its proposed acquisition of the system and related benefits. The Judge will then have an opportunity to reevaluate the Tentative Decision and issue an order or judgement. Read the Statement

The Honorable Judge Fruin of the Los Angeles Superior Court issued a tentative decision in the City’s eminent domain case to acquire the Claremont Water System. Judge Fruin’s decision favors Golden State Water, finding it in the public’s best interest for the system to remain as a private investor-owned utility. The City has fifteen days to submit comments arguing against the tentative decision. A final decision will be issued once Judge Fruin considers the comments submitted by both parties. Should the final decision be against the City, the City Manager will forward a recommendation to the City Council to discuss the appeal process.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, City Manager Tony Ramos announced the appointment of Captain Shelly Vander Veen as the new Chief of Police for the City of Claremont. Captain Vander Veen will assume the duties of Chief on November 23, 2016 following the retirement of Chief Paul Cooper.

New Sanitation Vehicles will replace existing trucks that have exceeded their useful life.
On July 26, 2016 the City Council reviewed two design concepts for the bridge. Both designs featured wider openings for traffic and pedestrian walkways then originally proposed. The cost of constructing a bridge with a wider opening was an estimated $5-6 million that the City would be responsible for paying. The Council voted 4-1 to keep the crossing at street level citing the lack of City-funding and community support for the bridge.

The new play equipment at Wheeler Park Playground Project (626) Vista Drive) has been installed. The southern playground was updated with a new play structure designed to accommodate children ages 2-12. The new equipment was selected through a community input process involving Wheeler Park neighbors and Claremont After School Program (CLASP) participants.

William Lyon Homes, the developer of the Meadow Park project at the southeast corner of Towne and Foothill, has stopped construction while they evaluate the market. The developer anticipates making a decision on how they want to move forward by June. In the meantime, City staff is monitoring the property closely and will be making sure that it continues to be maintained. The sales office parking lot has been closed off and the property has been secured. The City will continue to provide updates on this project as plans progress.

The results of the CoolCalifornia Challenge are now official, and Claremont has secured first place and the title of “Coolest California City”! More than 500 Claremont households participated, earning over two million points—nearly twice as many as our nearest competitor, Long Beach. Over $51,000 in prize money will be awarded to Sustainable Claremont, to implement sustainability programs in the Claremont community.

The 2016 Wilderness Park parking permits are now available at City Hall and the Alexander Hughes Community Center during regular business hours. As a reminder, all 2013-15 Resident Parking Permits expired January 1, 2016. Residents needing a Resident Permit for 2016-18 must reapply for a permit.

In July, the City of Claremont and MIG Consulting released the Draft Claremont Hills Wilderness Park Master Plan. Following the release of the Draft Plan, the City held a Community Workshop to gather input and comments from the public on the Draft Plan recommendations. City staff used the feedback received from the Community Meeting to make revisions to the recommendations. These revised recommendations have been included in the Final Draft Master Plan, which released January 14, 2016.
The Historic Claremont Depot has been leased to the Claremont Museum of Art. Effective, February 19, 2016, restrooms in the facility will be available for museum patrons only.
