As you may have heard, as of August 1, 2006, Time Warner Cable has purchased Comcast Cable. Therefore, Time Warner is now the franchised provider of cable television service in Claremont. With the change, there are a few channels offered by Comcast that Time Warner Cable does not have the rights to currently carry, and therefore, may not be available as part of the channel line up. These channels are NFL Network, NFL Network HD, and ESPNU. ESPN and ESPN2 will continue to be available. Time Warner can be contacted through their customer service phone line at (888) 255-5789. Time Warner will continue to operate the local office in Claremont for those who prefer to do business face-to-face. The office is located at 212 S. Indian Hill Boulevard. You can also visit their website at TimeWarnerCable.com/Welcome.
While Time Warner (formerly Comcast) is the only cable TV company serving Claremont, there is no legal reason why there couldn't be others. In fact, federal law prohibits cities from entering into exclusive franchise agreements with cable TV providers. The primary reason there aren't other cable companies serving Claremont is economic; most cable companies don't believe they can recoup the high cost of constructing a cable system, $15-20 million in Claremont's case, in markets where they face competition from an existing cable company. There are several companies that do "overbuild," and we've invited them to offer service here. However, they have chosen not to as they tend to operate in much larger communities with a higher number of potential customers.
