Sustainability-Related Awards

The City of Claremont has received an array of awards and accolades for its efforts toward operating sustainability, including:

  • Tree City USA Award, National Arbor Day Association. (30+ years and counting)
  • 28th Fair Trade Town in the United States (2012)
  • Silver status as a California Green Community (2012)
  • Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community, awarded by the League of American Bicyclists (2013)
  • Green Leader Award, awarded by the San Gabriel Valley Energy Leader Partnership (2014)
  • 2nd Place in Cool California City Challenge (2014)

 

The City of Claremont also participated in the Beacon Award Program, sponsored by the Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative (2015).  The City received four Spotlight Awards for its sustainability efforts on October 1st during the 2015 League of California Cities Annual Conference in San Jose.  The awards are presented by the Institute for Local Government and Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative under the Beacon Awards program, which honors California cities and counties that are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy and adopt policies and programs that promote sustainability.

Claremont received the following awards:

  • Silver Spotlight Award for 8% agency greenhouse gas reductions

  • Gold Spotlight Award for 12% agency energy savings

  • Gold Spotlight Award for 15% natural gas savings

  • Gold Spotlight Award for sustainability best practices

To receive these awards, the City of Claremont implemented a number of innovative programs, policies and initiatives including: adoption of a Sustainable City Plan, passage of an ordinance encouraging undergraduates at the Claremont Colleges to use alternative forms of transportation, promotion of drought tolerant landscaping, offering free door-to-door electronic waste collection, recycling, and disposal, and hosting many sustainability-focused community events, including the annual Earth Day street fair, Bike to Work Week, and the Claremont Energy Challenge campaign.
