The City Council is seeking the community’s input on a new Police Facility proposal based on recommendations from a citizens’ Ad Hoc Committee. The new Police Facility would replace the existing station on Bonita Avenue. The current station was built in 1972 and no longer meets the needs of the Police Department. Structural engineers have also determined the building will not withstand a major earthquake and major renovations are more costly than building a new facility.

In November of 2015, the City put a parcel tax measure before the voters to finance the construction of a new Public Safety Facility. Claremont voters rejected Measure PS. Feedback from voters noted that the size, location, and cost of the proposed facility were major factors in the failure of the bond measure. Following the election, Mayor Corey Calaycay formed a citizen Ad Hoc Committee to research the Public Safety Facility and make recommendations to the Council on the cost, size, location, and financing mechanism for a revised facility.

The Ad Hoc Committee presented their recommendations to Council in July 2016. The Committee was unanimous on all recommendations except the finance mechanism. The committee recommended a 25,000 sq foot facility for $25 million and financed for no more than 25 years.

Based on the recommendations, the City hired architect firm, WMM Associates, to create a schematic design of a future police facility. Over the last nine months, City staff worked with the architect firm to design a building that would allow a future station to be built at the current Police Department location, 570 W. Bonita Ave. On July 25, the City Council reviewed the design and directed staff to proceed with public outreach to determine the appropriate funding mechanism with the goal of placing a measure on the June 5, 2018 ballot.

The City will be hosting a series of public meetings to present the designs to the community and gather input on the financing mechanism. A mailer will be sent to homes with meeting dates and more information.
