Information on Districting Process
The City Council is considering a transition to district-based elections for the 2020 elections. Currently, the City conducts at-large elections. Should the City transition to district-based elections, the City would be divided into geographic areas and voters would select a Council candidate from their district.
The Council is considering this transition in light of recent California Voter Rights Act lawsuits. By initiating the process of districting, the City can avoid costly legal fees and maintain control over the districting process. The City has until February 12, 2019 to conduct the process without threat of litigation.
The City will hold five public hearings and four community workshops to allow residents an opportunity to participate in these discussions.
