FIRST AID, CPR AND AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED):
ALL Claremont Police Department Police Officers and Jailers complete 8 hours every two years of the below training. Legal - Officer Safety first, always. By law, you are not required to render care when a reasonable danger exists. You are protected as long as you act within your scope of training, in good faith, and provide a standard of care within your training and agency policy. Expressed consent v. implied consent (i.e. unconscious).
TRAINING OUTLINE - PRACTICAL TESTING AND/OR KEY POINTS FOR DISCUSSION
FIRST AID TOPICS:
PPE’s and BSI – Consider two sets of nitrile gloves (i.e. Fentanyl) / carry hand sanitizer. Discuss handling of substance believed to be Fentanyl or it’s unknown but highly suspected. Narcan locations and treatment (use practice doses).
Basic Examination and Assessment (demonstrate) – Primary assessment / ABC’s (LOC + rapid methodical head to toe for major bleeding)
Bleeding Control – Direct pressure, Tourniquet , then hemostatic dressing with pressure dressing.
OBSTRUCTED AIRWAY (demonstrate):
Adult Conscious (implied and expressed consent) - Heimlich maneuver (chest thrusts on pregnant female)
1 rescuer / 2 rescuer
Infant (0-1 years old), child (1-13 years old)
Discuss head position and hand placement
First officer doing CPR, second officer arrives and should attach the AED
Emergency Childbirth Treatment for shock
Sucking chest wound
Fractures and Splinting
Burns – heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation
Heart Attacks and Strokes
Diabetes – Position of comfort and oral glucose (i.e. orange juice)
Heat and Cold Emergencies
AED TRAINING (demonstrate):
Infant/child pads - Under 8 years old or 25 KG
Walk through scenarios (stop CPR when analyzing, pads front and back if surface area is too small, etc.)
Clean AEDs with disinfecting wipes
